LASUED Strengthens Academic Standards with Capacity-Building Workshop

The Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) has reiterated its commitment to sustained excellence in academic standards, following a 100% accreditation success for its 64 academic programs.

The university’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Bidemi Bilkis Lafiaji-Okuneye, made this declaration at the opening ceremony of a two-day capacity-building workshop for staff, themed “From Standard to Sustenance: Approaches to Strengthening Accredited Programmes.”

In her address, Professor Lafiaji-Okuneye highlighted the University’s progress within a relatively short period of its existence, attributing the success to all the staff, and commending their unwavering dedication and collective contributions to the success of the institution.

The Vice Chancellor recalled that the last quarter of 2024 marked a historic milestone for LASUED, when the University presented sixty-four (64) academic programmes for accreditation by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

The result, she noted, was “overwhelmingly heart-warming” — LASUED achieved a 100 per cent accreditation success, with sixty-one (61) programmes granted full accreditation and only three (3) receiving interim accreditation.

“This remarkable feat, achieved in less than four years of our transmutation from the former Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education (AOCOED) and Michael Otedola College of Primary Education (MOCPED), is not just a victory for LASUED,” she declared. “It is a testimony to the collective zeal, dedication, and determination of every member of our workforce, and the proactive, responsive, and visionary leadership driving this University.”

Professor Lafiaji-Okuneye attributed the feat to the commitment of staff and students, the guidance of the NUC, and the unflinching support of the Lagos State Government under the leadership of the University’s Visitor, Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, Governor of Lagos State.

She noted that the University’s journey from inception has been guided by a clear and strategic vision to establish LASUED as a globally competitive, research-driven, and professionally distinguished institution of teacher education.

“This vision, she emphasised, is encapsulated in the University’s strategic development framework — the A.C.H.I.E.V.E Agenda, which represents Academic Culture, Community Relations, Human Capacity Development, Infrastructural Growth, Entrepreneurship, Valuable Research, and Excellence in Professionalism”.

“Our 100% accreditation success is a direct product of the A.C.H.I.E.V.E Agenda,” the Vice Chancellor remarked. “But beyond achieving standards, we must now sustain them. This workshop is therefore designed to strengthen our institutional capacity, deepen our professional ethos, and ensure that what we have attained becomes the minimum benchmark for future progress.”

The Vice Chancellor further charged all staff to remain committed to institutional excellence, reiterating that the sustenance of the University’s achievements would depend on collective effort, renewed dedication, and continuous professional growth.

She disclosed that the workshop was strategically designed to address topical issues that cut across leadership, mentorship, research, postgraduate programme development, student affairs, financial prudence, ethics, communication management, and maintenance culture, all critical to sustaining the University’s academic and administrative standards.

The event featured a keynote presentation by Professor Oluwatoyin Temitayo Ogundipe, FAS, FAAS, FLS, immediate past Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos and current Pro-Chancellor of Redeemer’s University (RUN).

Professor Ogundipe, a distinguished scholar and administrator, delivered an insightful lecture on “Effective Leadership in University Administration.”

He emphasised that effective leadership is the cornerstone of institutional excellence, shaping quality, sustainability, and societal impact. He noted that true academic leadership must balance vision with pragmatism, inspiring intellectual growth while promoting accountability and collaboration.

According to him, “University leadership is not just about titles but about creating a culture that sustains innovation, integrity, and inclusivity. Sustaining standards requires leaders who are adaptable, communicative, and visionary.”

The two-day workshop, which attracted Deans, Directors, Heads of Departments, academic and non-academic staff, was designed as part of LASUED’s continuous professional development strategy aimed at strengthening internal quality assurance mechanisms and ensuring that the University’s programmes remain relevant, robust, and responsive to global educational trends.

Professor Lafiaji-Okuneye reaffirmed that the University remains committed to producing well-rounded, highly skilled, and ethically sound educators who will contribute meaningfully to the transformation of Nigeria’s educational landscape and serve as ambassadors of excellence in the teaching profession.

She also reiterated her administration’s determination to sustain the culture of accountability, innovation, and integrity across all facets of University life.
