University Of Ilorin Gets New Name
Kwara- The popular University of Ilorin, (UNIlORIN) has been renamed as Sheik Alimi University on Monday in honour of the late Sheik, just like Uthman Danfodiyo in Sokoto and others.
Alh Aliyu Otta-Uthman, president of the Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union (IEDPU), called on the federal and state governments at the Emir palace on Monday to rename the University of Ilorin to Sheikh Alimi University.
The Emirate descendants President of IEDPU also requested that the state government locate the proposed Kwara State University of Education within the Ilorin megacity.
According to him,” the creation of the Kwara State University of Science and Technology in Ilorin, which would serve as a training institution where some of our gifted and talented indigenes can develop their inventive acumen and get certified for the needed technological and economic development of not only our state but of the nation in general,”
“In the light of these precedencies, we fervently call on the state government to take our request for the renaming of the University of Ilorin as ‘Sheikh Alimi University, Ilorin’ in honour of the founder of the southernmost Emirate in Nigeria to the National Assembly through the Senator representing Kwara Central Senatorial District and his colleagues in the House of Representatives”.
“We know our representatives are up to the task and we hope that the state government would do the needful to actualise this noble course,” he said.
Meanwhile, Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq assured Emirate descendants of great development for Ilorin and Kwara state at large.
He also expressed gratitude to the IDEPU and the people of Kwara state for their courageous support.
In his remark, the Emir of Ilorin appreciated the governor for the opportunities given to women in his administration and for the progress of Kwara state in rectifying wrongs in the state.
