Police Machines, NSCDC Sets For Security Cup Showdown

Officers of the Nigeria Police and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) will be renewing their rivalry when both teams clash in the final of the 5th edition of Ogun SWAN Security Cup on Friday at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
En route to the final, Police Machine thrashed Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) 5-nil while NSCDC edged past the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) team by a lone goal in the semi-final matches played on Monday at the same venue.
Recall that in 2021, NSCDC beat the Police Machine 1-nil to lift the maiden edition of the annual competition.
In 2023, the Police officers dislodged the officers of the NSCDC 2-1 in the final to win the N.5million prize money as champions of the 3rd edition.
In 2024, the Police Machine continued their dominance over their arch-rival Civil Defence, beating them 4-2 in a penalty shootout in the semi-final.
At this year’s edition, Police Machine proves its resilience and dominance in the competition by beating NSCDC 4-3 in a thrilling group stage encounter on MatchDay 1.
The overpowering Police officers went on to beat the firefighters of Ogun State Fire Service 2-1 to reach the semi-final stage.
In the semi-final encounter, the Police dismantled the mounted road block of FRSC with 5-nil to book a place in the final against NSCDC, who defeated EFCC 1-0 in the second semi-final match.
The final of the annual football competition being organised by the Ogun State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) will hold on Friday at 2pm.

…Urges Super Eagles to Prepare for African Nations Cup
President Bola Tinubu admonished the Super Eagles to prepare well for the African Nations Cup following their loss against the DR Congo on Sunday.
He stated that they put up their best efforts towards qualifying for the FIFA World Cup, despite their loss in the playoffs on Sunday.
In a Press release signed by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to President Tinubu, (Information & Strategy) on Monday, charging the Eagles to put behind them the loss to the Democratic Republic of Congo and prepare for the African Cup of Nations, which will kick off from December 2025 to January 2026 in Morocco.
Recall that Nigeria’s dream of featuring in the World Cup was dashed as Congo DR eliminated the Super Eagles in a dramatic qualifier play-off on Sunday night in Morocco.
The Eagles lost in a penalty shootout after the game ended 1-1 in extra time. DR Congo triumphed 4-3 on penalties to advance to the Inter-Confederation play-off, keeping their own 2026 World Cup hopes alive.
President Tinubu says that, although it was painful that the Eagles failed to qualify for the World Cup tournament for the second consecutive time, the team must be commended for striving hard to reach the Mundial, particularly after winning their first playoff match.
President Tinubu remarks: “Notwithstanding the unfortunate loss, we must commend the players for their efforts and continue to support them.
“We must now plug all the loopholes. Our football administrators, players, and indeed all stakeholders must go back to the drawing board.
“Now is the time to focus all efforts on the Cup of Nations. Our Super Eagles must recover the lost glory.”

Lafarge Africa, ValueJet Nigeria, and the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority (OORBDA) have thrown their weight behind the 2025 SWAN Security Cup, boosting the glamour of the annual inter-agency football competition in Ogun State.
Lafarge Africa will provide kits for the four semi-finalists. Speaking on the support, Lafarge’s Head of Corporate Communications, Ginikanwa Frank-Durugbor, emphasised the company’s dedication to initiatives that foster unity and promote well-being among security personnel in its host communities.
“We recognise the vital role security agencies play in maintaining peace and order in Ogun State,” said Frank-Durugbor. “By supporting the SWAN Security Cup, we’re encouraging camaraderie, promoting healthy rivalry, and reinforcing our commitment to the peaceful coexistence of the communities where we operate.”
ValueJet Nigeria, led by CEO Hon. Kunle Soname, donated prize money for the finalists, continuing its tradition of supporting grassroots sports. Soname noted, “Sports have the power to unite people and inspire greatness. Supporting the SWAN Security Cup aligns with our vision to promote youth engagement and celebrate the dedication of our security operatives.”
Also lending support, OORBDA CEO Dr Adedeji Ashiru promised contributions of bottled water, palm oil, and other local produce for the finals, affirming the agency’s commitment to wellness and unity among security operatives.
Chairman of Ogun SWAN, Comrade Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji, expressed gratitude to the sponsors, noting that their support highlights the importance of public-private partnerships in driving community development through sports.
