…IPAC laments over the tight timelines for preparations
Barely ten (10)days to the election the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) has made a significant U-turn, requesting candidates from all political parties for screening in the upcoming 2024 Local Government elections.
This change came after a court ruling challenged the imposition of fees, which many saw as a barrier to entry for grassroots candidates without deep pockets.
Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Hon. Abayomi Sanyaolu, hailed the judiciary’s role in ensuring fairness, calling it a “great development” that the judiciary proved to be the last hope of the masses.
He also pointed out the challenges that come with OGSIEC’s delayed timing, as the commission’s letter requesting candidate lists by November 7 leaves only nine days before the election scheduled for November 16.
Sanyaolu expressed concern about tight timelines, noting that candidates will struggle to campaign, print posters, or engage with voters. The hurried approach, he says, “diminishes the dignity of our democratic process in Ogun State.
“Despite the court’s decision and OGSIEC’s revised position, the short timeline for compliance raises questions about the integrity of the electoral process. Will OGSIEC be able to address these concerns and ensure a fair and robust democratic process? He asked.
