Kamala Harris has selected Tim Walz, the Governor of Minnesota, as her running mate for the presidential election.

Walz, a former high school teacher and coach, will become vice president if Harris wins the election in November.

Background: Walz is a 60-year-old Nebraska native who served in the Army National Guard for 24 years and taught high school in China and Nebraska before moving to Minnesota in 1996

Political career: Walz was elected to the House of Representatives in 2006 and served until 2019 when he became Minnesota’s governor. He was reelected in 2022.

Selection process: Harris interviewed several top contenders in Washington DC over the weekend and reportedly had not made up her mind until earlier today.

Campaign: Harris and Walz will campaign in all seven battleground states, beginning with an appearance in Philadelphia, where Walz will officially receive Secret Service detail.

Reactions: Liberal and conservative Democrats have praised Walz as a VP pick, with Independent Sen. Joe Manchin predicting he “will bring normality back to the most chaotic political environment.
