Insecurity: Ogun Assembly Seeks Restructuring of Amotekun

Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a resolution calling on the State Government to reposition the State Security Network Agency-Amotekun Corps for effectiveness in securing the lives and properties of residents of the State.
They also called for the appointment of a new State Commander, not below the rank of a Major or its equivalence in other Security Agencies to oversee the activities of the Agency following the death of its former Commander and the need to recruit more capable personnel to strengthen the Corps’ operations.
This, the Assembly noted would help tackle the incessant security breaches especially kidnappings and armed robberies being experienced in some parts of the State.
Opening debate on the motion leading to the passage of the Resolution during the plenary presided over by Speaker Oludaisi Elemide, the Sponsor of the resolution, Hon. Babatunde Tella, had reported the ineffectiveness of the Amotekun Corps following the demise of the State Commander, CP David Akinremi.
He disclosed that there had been reports that the operation of the agency was being hampered by insufficient funds; stressing that the Corps was in dire need of more personnel, who should be localized in the communities, ammunitions, and vehicles to enable them to meet up with the responsibilities of providing adequate security in the State.
Other members who contributed to the debate including Honourables Olusegun Kaka, Adebisi Oyedele Minority Leader Lukman Adeleye, Adegoke Adeyanju, and Fola Salami, recounted incidents of insecurity, especially kidnappings in their respective constituencies, which needed to be addressed headlong.
The resolution also sought the need to equip the Amotekun Corps with modern ammunition, up-to-date communication gadgets, and other security apparatus as well as the procurement of additional vehicles to aid the operations and other activities of the Corps.
The debate later led to the motion for the resolution moved by the Majority Leader, Yusuf Sheriff, seconded by the Minority Leader, Adeleye Lukman, and supported by the Whole House through a unanimous voice vote.

The Senate’s Ad hoc Committee investigating the collapse of the Safe School Initiative has summoned Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, to appear before it on Tuesday next week.
The committee, chaired by Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu, also plans to summon Ministers of Education and Defence, Tunji Alausa and Christopher Musa, as well as other stakeholders.
The committee aims to unravel issues surrounding the initiative’s implementation and ensure accountability, amid concerns over 1,680 school children kidnapped and 180 educational facilities attacked since 2014.
Kalu vowed to track funds allocated to the initiative, including $30 million mobilised between 2014 and 2021, and N144 billion recently released by the federal government.

The Ogun State Ministry of Justice hereby informs the public that it is expediting action on the prosecution of Ademola Abiodun, aka DJ Chicken, in relation to the vehicular incident of 1 November 2025.
On 1 November 2025, Mr Abiodun crashed into two motorcycles in Sagamu, Ogun State, seriously injuring a rider and a female passenger.
Mr Abiodun was unremorseful and attempted to leave the scene of the incident, which provoked an angry reaction from passersby who mobbed him.
At the time, the Ogun State Police Command initiated an investigation and review of the circumstances, prioritising the medical care, privacy, and recovery of the victims.
Yesterday, 23 November 2025, in Lekki, Lagos State, Mr Abiodun was again involved in another road crash.
This lone car incident almost harmed pedestrians, but for good fortune and the pedestrians’ quick reflexes.
Yesterday’s incident is reportedly the third road crash in two months involving Mr Abiodun at the wheel.
While it may be reasonable to allow crash victims to get compensation from persons who have driven recklessly and to resolve road traffic collisions as a civil wrong, some road users are a special danger to society and should be held to account under criminal law. Mr Abiodun is one such person.
At least two of the crashes were documented in real-time video coverage and are self-evident. Mr Abiodun’s heedless return to the wheel with no greater care just three weeks after makes it imperative that the State must intervene to protect the public – especially as there is an organic outcry against his continued driving.
Accordingly, the Attorney-General and Honourable Commissioner for Justice – Oluwasina Ogungbade, SAN – has directed relevant officers to expedite action on the pending crash case from Sagamu for prompt arraignment.
The Office of the Attorney-General is working closely with the Police to achieve this outcome.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has described the attack on a church in Kwara State, where three worshipers were killed and others abducted by bandits, as dastardly and condemnable.
Speaker Abbas said the attack is not only daring but also unfortunate, charging security forces to step up their game following recent attacks on soft targets in parts of the country.
Bandits had on Tuesday attacked worshippers at a branch of the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Eruku, Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, with three of the members confirmed killed and an unknown number kidnapped.
While stating that criminals and criminality have no place in Nigeria, Speaker Abbas said the National Assembly will continue to prioritise the security and welfare of Nigerians, which is the primary responsibility of the government.
The Speaker commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, who was billed to leave Nigeria on Wednesday for the 20th G20 Summit in South Africa and later Luanda to attend the 7th AU-EU Summit, for suspending the trip.
Speaker Abbas prayed for the safe return of the abducted Kebbi schoolgirls and Kwara worshippers.
