IBEDC Ogun Regional HSE Team Sensitises Students On Danger Of Electricity

The Ogun State Health Safety and Environment (HSE)of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) on Wednesday sensitized students of Lisabi Grammar School, Idiaba, Abeokuta on danger attached to electricity, and electrical safety.

The Regional Head of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) Ogun, Engr Abdul Razaq Jimoh while speaking with journalists at the school premises said that the sensitization is to bring closer awareness and danger attached to electricity and the electrical safety precautions ahead of the harmattan season, and beyond.

He warned against burning grass or any material under high-tension power lines, saying that it can lead to dangerous fire outbreaks.

Jimoh also advised in case of any cut of conductors, they should not take it upon themselves, but to try as much as possible to report to the nearest office, while advising that parents should (earth) the building because any building without an earth is dangerous for electricity.

He said “There might be cut of conductors and there might be a fire outbreak, what they need to do is just to report to the nearest office, and not to play near any potential or any cut conductor”

“When you want to iron your uniform, your hands must not be wet, when they want to open the freezer or the fridge they should have a carpet that they will be stepping on opening the fridge or freezer”.

He also admonished parents to ensure that they watch out for their kids so that they don’t play around with electrical appliances which are very dangerous to them”.

Responding, the Principal of Lisabi Grammar School Odutayo Titilope commended the idea of the HSE IBEDC, pointing out that most of the children know nothing about electricity, assuring that safety tips given to them tips on how to handle appliances are commendable.

“It’s a welcome idea because most of these children know nothing about electricity, and coming around to give them tips on how to handle electrical appliances and how to mind themselves when they come across a wire that fell on the ground in their community. I think this is a welcome idea, the students will know the right thing to do”.

Tips mentioned to them are as follows:

1. Do not operate electrical appliances with a wet hand. Water and electricity do not agree, water is a good conductor of electricity.

2. Do not overload your electrical sockets with many appliances at a time.

3. Do not plug heavy appliances such as electric iron, boilerplate, or boiler ring into the extension, plug them directly into wall sockets
Do not play near or come close to broken or snapped power lines.

4. Avoid contact with any exposed electrical parts

5. Do not play, relax, or erect structures under power lines. It is a danger zone, as no one can tell when the wire will cut. Therefore, When you get home, tell your parents, sisters, brothers, and relatives not to trade under power lines.

6 Do not climb a tree that an electrical wire passes through, as current might be induced with the tree which could lead to electric shock or electrocution.

7 Avoid energy Theft such as Meter bypass, vandalization, illegal connection, etc they could lead to Fire outbreaks damage to property, or loss of life.
