HRJN Empowers Journalists, CSOs with Digital Security Skills to Mitigate Online Threats

In a bold move to safeguard press freedom, the Human Rights Journalists Network (HRJN) has empowered journalists, activists, and civil society organizations with critical digital security skills.
This timely intervention comes as stakeholders increasingly target journalists with digital attacks, aiming to silence them.
The two-day workshop, held at the International Press Centre in Lagos, was a collaborative effort with GAVEL, DIGITUP Tech, BONews, and ChatVE, made possible by the support of the M Charles Stewart MOTT Foundation and West Africa Civil Society (WACSI).
The Executive Director of HRJN, Kehinde Adegboyega lamented over the growing threat to journalists, who are being illegally arrested and harassed for doing their constitutional duty.
He underscored the need for a united front to protect journalists and ensure they can continue to hold those in power accountable.
The HRJN was established to provide a safety net for journalists, with or without organizational backing including litigation support.
“By providing digital security training, the network aims to equip media practitioners with the tools they need to mitigate online threats and continue their vital work without fear of reprisal.”
He expressed displeasure over journalists not being reported when they have been illegally arrested for doing their jobs as required by the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
According to him” We started the Human Rights Journalists network to give support to journalists, we understand that some organizations have their theme”
“One of our core areas thematic is to give support to journalists, especially on litigation issues”.
He expressed optimism on the feedback from trainees, assuring more support and provision of resources on digital security tools to prevent continuous attacks on journalists, especially in their digital space.
At the workshop, journalists were trained on digital surveillance, how to protect themselves from pegasus attacks, the usefulness of AI, and other relevant tools.
