For the Record: Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu’s Contribution To The Debate On The Passage Of The Supplementary Budget

Your Excellency, how you know a proactive government is when such a government has policies that are as dynamic as the changing times and tide in the nation.
If you may recall, not too long ago, the government took some serious critical economic policy. That policy created gaps but the government didn’t close their ears to the yearning, the tears of the citizens.
What they did was to run to the parliament for a supplementary budget of about N819 billion to cushion the effects. That was excellent.
Again, the government has noticed that there are gaps not created by this government but by the economic circumstances we have found ourselves. Created by what we have inherited over the years.
And understanding the situation of our country, certain things need urgency. That’s why some of the things we discuss here, we call them matters of national urgent importance.
We have the rainy season here, we have the dry season. If certain things are not done within the dry season, we will lose the essence.
One of those things is the need for us to move about freely in this country especially as it concerns road Infrastructure.
This government has in line with the provisions of the federal character principle decided to go on an outing, with what I call a “gap breaching supplementary budget” on road Infrastructure and I must mention that it cuts across the whole nation.
This is a beautiful budget they have brought on board. Beyond this, on security, they have thought it wise that for us to enhance peace around the country and security of life and property, expenditure must be made on defense. It’s part of this because it’s the primary purpose of government
Majority Leader spoke about additional palliative measures which all need to make sure that the gap created by the circumstances we have found ourselves in will be taken care of
This is worthy of our support especially when you consider that the civil servants have been considered. The President and the executives are working on their talk.
Recently, they increased the wages for the civil servants. Now, they are making budgets to be able to put their mouth where it matters most and put their pockets where it matters most.
I’m standing to ask that this House considers the passion, desire, the intention of the executive in providing this supplementary budget especially when it comes to housing. The idea and intention of the federal government is to make sure we have 2,000 housing units in all six geopolitical zones.
This is a budget for all of us, for Nigeria. I urge you to support it with everything you hold dear.
