…As Aletheia University Ago-Iwoye holds 2nd matriculation and oath ceremony
Experts have called for a shift from traditional teaching methods to a more personalized and holistic approach to education, advocating that education should go beyond paper certification.
Professor Kehinde Thomas, Professor of Agricultural Extention and Rural Development at the University of Ibadan, who spoke as the keynote speaker at the 2nd matriculation and oath ceremony of Aletheia University on Saturday, declared that the focus should be on developing well-rounded individuals equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in an ever-changing world.
Speaking in the paper titled: “University education beyond paper certification: “Aletheia University model”, he posited that an ideal education should prioritize critical thinking, problem-solving, and emotional intelligence alongside academic knowledge.
Speaking on the evolution of technology, he noted the incorporation of technology would enrich their learning experiences, encourage creativity and exploration, and prepare them for the challenges of the modern world.
University education plays a crucial role in human development on a global scale, providing advanced skills required for success in the labour market. By attending university, individuals can gain expertise to thrive in their chosen careers, acquire skills to make a positive impact in their community and work and develop into active members of society who value diversity and contribute to the greater good.
“As the world becomes increasingly complex, education must adapt to prepare students for the challenges ahead. By incorporating critical thinking, problem-solving, and technology integration, education can equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed”.
Citing the words of Marian Wright Edelman, “Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and working better than you found it.” It’s time to revolutionize education and unlock the full potential of students around the world” he concluded.
In his welcome address, the Vice-Chancellor congratulated the students on their achievements and urged them to take their studies seriously, warning that the university does not compromise on standards.
He emphasised the importance of hard work, discipline, and adherence to school rules and regulations.
The Vice-Chancellor also highlighted the university’s plans for growth and development, including the introduction of new programs and colleges.
He encouraged the students to set goals of excellence for themselves and strive to achieve them through hard work and dedication, noting the university’s commitment to academic excellence which was evident in its scholarship awards, when 18 students were presented award for their outstanding academic performance.
The university also promotes punctuality and celebrates students who demonstrate this virtue.
He advised them to shun social vices and focus on acquiring knowledge, skills, and character that will equip them for future success while assuring the students that the university community is committed to making their experience rewarding, memorable, and excellent.
Meanwhile, the founder of Aletheia University, Major General(rt) S A Awosanya, in his welcome address, urged the students to be mindful of what is going around them.
He admonished them to be problem solvers and creators of problems: “Work to proffer solutions to them”. Seize opportunities to create further opportunities. Think out of the box.
“Today marks the beginning of a 4-or 5-year contract between you and Aletheia University, to which this august gathering is a living witness. Your genuine acceptance of this offer will determine the outcome of the contract”.
“For orderliness and peace to reign, there are rules and regulations to guide our actions and behaviours. Please don’t run foul of them”. He said.
“I enjoin all our matriculating students to be focused and creative, be inquisitive and hardworking, be ambitious and hopeful and appreciate God all the time.
On this note, I want to wish you a spectacular learning experience that will raise you above your peers in any field of endeavours”.
