Eradicate Cultism Through Sports Development SWAN Tells Govt
The Ogun State Chairman of Sport Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Mr. Micheal Ogunsiji has told the state government about the need to curb cultism, hooliganism, and other vices through sporting activities.
Ogunsiji stated this during a courtesy visit to the commissioner of sport and development on Wednesday while appealing to the government to improve sports in Ogun state among the youths.
He added that Sports development in the state will help the youth to engage themselves in sports activities both in school and outside, noting that enough sports programs for youths will eradicate cultism, fraud, and other social vices.
He said, “The youths would love to see the glamorous and the glorious Principal’s cup come back to life. We want you to revive it and other sporting events. These competitions usually bring everybody, particularly youths together.”
“Besides, these sporting events will also serve as a veritable platform for the discovery and grooming of young stars who be useful for the state and country at large”, Ogunsiji said.
Ogunsiji also called for improvement and enough provision for Gateway United Football Club,(GUFC) saying that it encourages the youth to participate in sports activities, which will be a means to generate income for the state.
“The GUFC is one of the best in the NPFL (Nigeria Professional Football League) but now they are struggling in the NNL (Nigeria National League) yet there is no improvement because there is not enough provision for the team and management”.
Responding, the Commissioner for Youth and Sport Development Hon. Wasiu Isiaka, assured that before June 2024, the state would be fully prepared for the upcoming sports festival.
He noted that his administration would always support the GUFC to promote the NPFL stage and provide them with the necessary facilities they need.
Isiaka appealed to the SWAN executive and members to ensure continued partnership for the success of the government, assuring prompt action in any lapses.
