Empowering Muslim Women: Ogun Deputy Governor Urges Women to Take Active Roles in Society

The Ogun State Deputy Governor, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele has emphasized the significance of Islam as a guiding light in shaping families, communities, and society, calling on womenfolk to take responsive and responsible active roles in society.

She stated this at the annual Ramadan Tafsir for Women Organizations, held on Sunday at the Deputy Governor’s lodge in Abeokuta, while she encouraged Muslim women to support one another, stand firm in their beliefs, and remain steadfast in their duties.

Salako-Oyedele stressed the importance of women’s leadership roles, noting not just as position-holders, but as policymakers, change-makers, and mentors to the next generation.

She urged women to take inspiration from the lessons learned during Ramadan and apply them to their daily lives while nurturing their families with love and raising children with strong Islamic values.

According to her, “The Ramadan lecture serves as a reminder of the importance of unity, sisterhood and the continuous pursuit of knowledge, noting that for those present, it showcases the invaluable contribution women bring to leadership roles across different spheres of lives as Muslim women”

“As women, who have a duty to be positive role models for the Islamic faith, it is necessary to continue the commitment to the dean, devotion to learning as well as personal Development”

Speaking on the topic; the significance of Ramadan and its last ten days, Imam Daud Sanusi reminded the audience of the importance of fasting, adding it is not just a physical act but a means to cultivate fear of God, physical health benefits, and increased self-control.

He noted that the major reason why God directed the Muslim faithful to fast was to follow God’s directives as well as fear Him.

He pointed out that the month of Ramadan was the month God established the Quran while enjoining the Muslim faithful to desist from the popular saying “Awe tiba awe Nile”

Elaborating on the benefits of Ramadan, he said Allah gave those who observe fasting wholeheartedly physical health benefits; fasting activates our body system to memorise and control anger, increases the life span of not only human beings but animals and also helps people combat epileptic seizures.

The Ogun State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Adeleye Adijat, in her remarks, appreciated Governor Dapo Abiodun for appointing a woman of substance and highly intellectual, saying she is not only the Deputy Governor of the State but really representing the women folk, also calling on women to acquire more certificates and join politics to meet up the requirements in terms of political appointment.

In their separate remarks, the Ogun State Deputy Speaker, Hon. Lateefat Ajayi and Hon. Justice Safrat Bello commended the Deputy Governor for bringing women together to learn more of the word of Alla,h, especially during the Ramadan period, enjoining Muslim women to train their wards not only in education but more in Islam, while expressing displeasure on the issue of women marginalisation in government positions.

Contributing to the Iyaloja General of Ogun State, Alhaja (Chief) Mrs Yemisi Abass stressed the need for women to assert themselves and develop an interest in politics to gain relevance and be closer to God for guidance.

Representatives of MuslimWomenm societies at the event appreciated the Deputy Governor for organising the annual Ramadan Tafseer and blessing Muslimfaithfuls, praying that Almighty Allah renewed her strength, granted all her heart desires and blessed her abundantly.
