Being a Communique by The Coalition of Registered Political Parties in Ogun State, on the ongoing Election Petition Tribunal between Hon. Ladi Adebutu, the Gubernatorial Candidate of PDP in the 2023 General Election, PDP against INEC, Prince Dapo Abiodun and APC
The members of the Coalition having been represented at all the sittings of the governorship election petition of PDP and its gubernatorial candidate, Hon. Ladi Adebutu against the declaration of Prince Dapo Abiodun of APC as the winner in the 2023 gubernatorial election in Ogun State resolved as follows:-
1. That the eminent jurists handling the petition were meticulous, and dedicated and showed a lot of patience in the way they handled their assignments.
2. That the witnesses and evidence presented by the Petitioners are about the largest in the history of election petitions in the State since the present democratic dispensations. PDP and Ladi Adebutu presented 94 witnesses and about 200,000 documents, most of which were certified by INEC. Conversely, while INEC did not present any Witnesses, APC and Prince Dapo Abiodun presented only 4 witnesses with very few documents.
3. That most of the witnesses presented by the Petitioners were agents/members of the Party and some eligible voters who had firsthand the thugs and hooligans deployed by the Respondents to disrupt the election process and scare away voters.
4. That if not for the expediency of time, members of the Coalition, who had agents in virtually all the polling booths would have appeared to give evidence in favor of the Petitioners. There is also ample evidence that the APC and Prince Dapo Abiodun deployed state machinery to intimidate and scare away voters in many polling booths on election day.
5. As major stakeholders in the political processes in the State who sponsored candidates for elective positions in the 2023 elections. We say without any equivocation that the people of Ogun State cast their votes for their preferred candidate.
6. The Tribunal, having wound up it’s sittings and given Counsels to the Petitioners and Respondents 4th of September, 2023 to adopt their written addresses, we are hopeful and optimistic that the eminent jurists, will do justice in a manner that will give credence to the maxim that “Judiciary is the last hope of the common man”. With this, a rebirth of Ogun State will be set in motion while the names of the Judges will occupy a pride of place in Ogun State Hall of Fame.
7. The Coalition being a stakeholders in Ogun State politics therefore once again salute the courage of the Tribunal members while waiting patiently and hopefully that judgement soon be delivered shall grow to be an eternal legal precedence in Ogun State and Nigeria’s history.
